About Me

Lots of people are aware of the funny idiosyncrasies of the Australian language...... a common tip for visitors keen to sound like a local, add an “o” to the end of each word, a ‘servo’ is a service station, rego is the car registration, the bottle-o is the bottle shop and reno is renovation. We are renovating our home, in other words, “we’re doing some reno’s”! This is our attempt at a blog, a way to describe the journey of the reno’s, an extended tale that's taken us from our little flat near a beach in Sydney, to our little miners cottage in Melbourne, come to think of it... we might call it the “reno blogo”.

This is a kitchen (before hand)

The Kitchen has arrived
And looks like this .........
all in boxes....
alas so much more work to do....
I don't think we're half way there at all...
No rest for the wicked...
But we're not wicked...

We're half way there!

We think we're half way there...
With the kitchen arriving soon - and tiles getting delivered, this could be the start of something good!
The video on the right shows our empty soon to be glorious bathroom.

Bye Bye Bathroom

If in doubt – rip it out, the bathroom has gone, makes things tricky when people come to visit. If you need to go to the loo, the rule is, head to the garage, grab one of the funky foldaway pushbikes, then ride a block north to Sister Mel’s place, you can borrow her toilet! (Note: don’t forget to grab her spare key just in case she’s out – you don’t want to be riding a bike around Collaroy when you’re busting!)

Beam me up Scotty

I mean.. ‘beam me up Matty’... the wall has been removed and everything looks in order... The 3rd floor hasn’t fallen in, the kitchen floor is still where we left it.... there is dust everywhere... I think it’s a winner

The Fall 2008

February 2008, there were no mass demonstrations, instead a Peaceful Revolution, East was to be united with West, bidding a final farewell to the border crossing between the Kitchen and the living room, citizens rejoiced as the wall came tumbling down....

The Wonder Wall

We got an engineer in to assess the building - anything is possible “Yes we can take the wall out – yes it is load bearing” We just have to put this massive beam in to hold the building up. The engineer drew up some plans for us, which most builders can follow, so we recruited this guy we met at a wedding - Matt from Aquitane Constructions to come over – check it out and then chop it out... Check out the video on the right - it's Matt an Stu and their wonderwall..

Preparing for the Before and After!

I guess the key is to show a really crappy before picture and then finish it off with a stunning after picture!
Well, let’s just see how we go - I’m sure the really crappy before picture shouldn’t be that hard to achieve...!
The kitchen has been completely stripped... I’ll have to dig out the pics to show what the kitchen looked like before...but for now – it’s completely stripped... we were loving the electric wok to cook every night...and all the plates, cutlery glasses etc are all on the dining room table...hence a really crappy before picture!

Skirting - well worth it...

I’m actually surprised at how little skirting costs considering it makes the place look a billion times better... I think we spent something like $70 on bits of timber...then painted them with a sponge... then placed them against the wall – We’ve screwed some to the wall – but most of them are still just lying around. It’s one of the first things we did to the place – madness really considering we were going to knock out a wall - It’s called Vodafone no plans! Renovating blindly...
